CIEJA Campo Limpo, a public school in a neighborhood that once was considered one of the most dangerous ones of the world, is probably the only building in town where the doors remain open.
The school is situated in the south of São Paulo between the slums (favelas) of ‘Parque Santo Antônio’ and ‘Godoy’. Right now the school has more or less 1200 students. Anybody older than 15 is welcome from 7:30 am until 10:30 pm. This is a place where you past does not matter, where you won´t be interrogated about how you ended up here. In fact, many of the pupils were sent to CIEJA by the court and the school played an important role in the pacification between the two fighting slums.

Inclusion of everybody in society is extremely important to this school, specifically the inclusion of people with special needs.

Briefly, the open doors symbolize a warm-hearted welcome, a fresh start and the freedom to shape a better, responsible future.

Templo has been founded in December 2012 by three entrepreneurs - Herman Bessler, student of Business and Economics, a non-formal educator who gained experience in Israel, 23 years old at the time, Afonso Soares and Iana Baremboim, with ultimate aim to build a new world together with other change-making entrepreneurs. The first cowork has been opened in Gavea, followed by a splendid space in Botafogo.

Projeto Âncora is a private NGO that offers education to children from Kindergarden until 14 years old. In 2016 the school will also offer higher secondary education (‘ensino medio’) from age 14 to 18 with the aim to become a subsidized public school. The pupils are mainly from the surroundings and are representing all social backgrounds.

Founding story
Before becoming a school, Projeto Âncora was a meeting point, an open learning space where children and their families were invited to practice citizenship through educational, cultural and artistic activities.
The founder of this Anchor project, Walter Steurer, even dreamt of an open learning city. After his death, the existing community wanted to keep the Anchor project alive by creating a school with a similar philosophy. The ‘Escola Ponte’ in Portugal, created by José Pacheco, with its democratic educational approach seemed to be the perfect match and soon José Pacheco was asked to build up the school.
